Could Jolla drop Beta sign with Sailfish OS 1.0.4.20 Ohijärvi

Jolla system update: Sailfish Ohijärvi 1.0.4.20

Urgent: Disable Openrepos before installing (tip from Kimmo Lindholm, thanks!)

Install: Settings --> About product --> pulley menu, check for updates. WLAN recommended.

System update in short

This is the fourth larger update for Sailfish, released on March 17, 2014. Jolla has announced that this update will bring the operating system to a ready stage for global commercial distribution. Does it get the system out of "Beta" is left for users to decide - In my personal opinion, unless the system doesn't enable all the phone specs it's not ready, but beta might have been changed to delta. LTE/4G support isn't there quite yet. Navigation is still missing. WLAN n might cause issues. Browser is better, but far from perfect. However, Sailfish has raised its sails - performance upgrades makes this phone fast now. Jolla has delivered a nice update with a lot of visual and functional improvements and bug fixes - let's get into these:

Top12 picks from the update (full changelog - together.jolla.com)

    • WLAN tethering: Sharing your mobile network connection to other devices via WLAN is now possible from the settings > system menu.
    • Landsape support extended: Apps "Mail", "Messages" and "Notes" added
    • Camera: Selectable ISO (100-400), delay optins for shutter, new cover, selectable exposure value (EV -2 to +2). Grid added, especially good when photographing for a new ambience.
    • Browser: New browser engine should enable better browsing experience. Fixes still needed.
    • Virtual keyboard: New fonts and better visuals are there for a better writing experience.
    • Calendar: Events sync for both directions with Google calendar. Editing google events in phone (time, topic, description) is possible, but change of the sub-calendar will be implemented later.
    • Email: Sync work better in selected interval. You can also find options to select the sending account & importance of the mail (tap on the three dots).
    • Store: New visuals, much better user experience. E.g. cCategories are moved to the bottom of the main screen (earlier on pulley menu)
    • WLAN connection: Connection should hold up slightly better now, but there are still isuues when using WLAN n.
    • Bluetooth connection: Syncing contacts with Bluetooth enabled for contacts, but only for a few phone models. Sync for events, and more phone models, is implemented later.
    • People: Improved vcf (contact card) import
    • The Other Half: The unique ID of TOH added to system info. This ID is needed e.g. when selling the phone - Jolla needs the number to reset the TOH for a new user. (yes, all TOH's are personal)
    • More: Some new settings, peformance improvements, bug fixes and visuals (e.g. tap-gesture on the lock screen lifts up the screen for a short moment, enabling a peek on battery, online status and mobile network info.) See all in the full changelog.

Known issues not yet fixed on this release

    • 4G/LTE connection. Official statement: LTE supported countries and operators will be published later.
    • Camera support for more Android apps (still not working in Facebook, Twitter)
    • Navigation feature for Jolla's HERE Maps. No news about development. Several Android navigation apps are reported to work, some better, some worse.
    • WLAN n stability. Connection lost sometimes, especially when Bluetooth on at the same time.
    •  SD card support is improved now, but sometimes the card must be manually reattached to access the files.

    Problems after updating the system?

      Upcoming Sailfish update releases

      • Jolla has stated that updates are planned to be released monthly. This one was a bit late, but now we don't need to wait a full month for the next one.

      Previous updates

        Sailfish Ohijärvi ?

Another update named by a lake. Ohijärvi is a very small lake (0,102 km²) located near Uusikaupunki, Finland.

Jolla has stated that they are using lakes of Finland in naming updates of Sailfish OS. There are 187 888 lakes in Finland, including the small ones, so we might have more than few updates coming. Looking at the size of the Ohijärvi, we could speculate that this is not a big update, but it sure makes using the phone much nicer again. I'm still holding my breath for Sailfish Saimaa!

Could Jolla drop Beta sign with Sailfish OS 1.0.3.8 Naamankajarvi

        Sailfish Naamankajärvi 1.0.3.8

Install: Settings --> About product --> pulley menu, check for updates. WLAN recommended.

        System update in short

This is the third larger update for Sailfish, released 31-Jan-2014. Jolla has suprised their users with featuring a possibility to unlock the bootloader (OEM lock release), better landscape usability (now in: camera, gallery, browser), better battery life (NFC bug fix), calendar improvements and much more.

As the NFC bug will be fixed with this update, you can remove the temporary masking with this detailed guide. Masking can be safely removed either before or after installing the update.

Top10 picks from the update (full changelog - together.jolla.com)

          • OpenSource improvement: Possibility to unlock the bootloader (under new recovery menu)
          • Battery life: NFC bug fix for better battery life
          • Browser: Landscape mode in browsing, keyboard, gestures, app cover
          • Camera: Zoom with pinch gesture. Full 2Mpx resolution into use with the front facing camera
          • Calendar: Option to select calendar when creating an event + location of event
          • Store: Android apps are now identified easier with included icon
          • Phone: Option in the Phone settings to disable quick call from logs. When disabled, tapping on the call log entry will open the corresponding contact card
          • User experience: After screen time out, return to last active app (within 30 sec)
          • TOH connection: Ambience changes only if the TOH ambience is set as a favourite, or the first time The Other Half is connected to the phone.
          • Android: Improved access to phone sensors (all 5). Improved memory handling when running low on memory. SMS support in runtime envorinment (Android apps are not able to read or send any SMS, but they can now open the native Sailfish messaging app)
          • Several more updates and bug fixes, see all in the full changelog

Known issues not yet fixed on this release

          • 4G/LTE connection. Official statement: LTE supporten countries and operators will be published later.
          • Camera support for more Android apps (still not working in Facebook, Twitter)
          • Navigation feature for Jolla's HERE Maps. No news about development. Several Android navigation apps are reported to work, some better, some worse.
          • Google's default calendar, contacts & events are only synched from internet to the phone - not the other way around. Adding or editing Google calendar events in the phone is useless.

Problems reported after updating the system

            Upcoming Sailfish update releases

            • Jolla has stated that updates are planned to be realeased monthly

            Previous updates

              Sailfish Naamankajärvi ?

Another update named by a lake. There are at least 4 lakes named "Naamankajärvi" in Finland, located at Pudasjärvi, Kuusamo, Suomussalmi and Oulu. All of them are quite small, the biggest one laying at Kuusamo, 7 565 km2.

Jolla has stated that they are using lakes of Finland in naming updates of Sailfish OS. There are 187 888 lakes in Finland, including the small ones, so we might have more than few updates coming. Looking at the size of the biggest Naamankajärvi, we could speculate that this is not as big update than the previous one - but I'm still holding my breath for Sailfish Saimaa!

HowTo: Settings --> About product --> pulley menu, check for updates. WLAN recommended.

In short: This is the second larger update for Sailfish, enabling better hardware support for Android Apps (e.g. Skype video calls, both cameras), one direction synching with Google calendar and better certification support for MS Exhange. What we're still missing after this update are a fix to the NFC bug, turn-by turn navigation for native Here maps, and landscape mode in several apps. Camera does support all 4 orientations now.

                Picks from the changelog (full)

                  • Camera: Improvements in exposure time and auto focus in low light conditions, improved switching from rear to front camera. Skype video calls are tested to work with both cameras.

                  • Documents from transfer UI can now be opened with Office app

Known bugs not yet fixed in this release

                    • NFC battery bug fix (coming soon)
                    • 4G/LTE connection. Official statement: LTE supporten countries and operators will be published later. Some speculation at Jolla Detailed Hardware Specs

                    • Landscape mode for several sailfish apps. No news about development

                    • Shared calendar synch missing both in Google calendar and MS exchange. No news about development.

                    Upcoming Sailfish update releases

                    •  2nd week of Janyary, 2014 (estimated):
Hotfix for NFC battery life bug
                    • Q1/2014: New features promised

Another update named by a lake, this time in same (language spoken in Lapland). The lake is located at Inari, Finland, and the name translates as "Southern lake" or "Base lake". Jolla has stated that they are using lakes of Finland in naming updates of Sailfish OS. There are 187 888 lakes in Finland, including the small ones, so we might have more than few updates coming. Looking at the size of Maadâjarvi, we could speculate that this is a bigger update than the previous one - but I'm still holding my breath for Sailfish Saimaa! Map below shows the finnish name, "Tyvijärvi". Oh, and just for note: There are no real sailfishes in any lakes in Finland.

Important note: The release date of the next Sailfish OS, or its changelog is not officially informed by Jolla. Other updates are possible, and we might also see another release, either with less or more fixes. It's also common in an OpenSource community to walk several paths, developing several versions at the same time and compiling them together to make a new distribution (See the amount of different Linux distributions, image at right.

                      Sailfish Laadunjarvi ?

So, we have an update named by a lake. This name translates as "The lake of quality". Jolla has stated that they are using lakes of Finland in naming updates of Sailfish OS. There are 187 888 lakes in Finland, including the small ones, so we might have more than few updates coming. Looking at the size of Laadunjarvi, we could speculate that this is not a remarkable update - I'm holding my breath for Sailfish Saimaa ! However, having first changelog visible is something I wasn't expecting yet. Great work!
